Have You Been Checked for HIV?
According to Kenneth Mayer of Brown University, more than 20% (more than 200,000 people) are unaware they are currently infected with HIV. This is life-threatening news. Just in case you need the reminder: this is the virus that causes the deadly AIDS.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants to launch a vigorous testing program aimed at those most likely to be infected.  This isn’t just for druggies, this is for those who partake in unprotected sex and/or have multiple partners.

Sadly, the study shows that more than 10,000 diagnosed with AIDS-defining illnesses—a sign of advanced HIV infection, only 5% had received an HIV test in the previous five months.  When this happens it’s “very painful for those of us that are in the field,” says John Bartlett, an AIDS expert at John Hopkins Medical School.

So, with the CDC taking a more proactive role in medical testing, expect your medical doctor to begin asking for more thorough STD testing. Also keep this in your mental file: many sexually active Americans have more than one STD at a time—and this makes them even more susceptible to HIV—and these diseases don’t show up overnight—so getting tested is vital (and then re-tested). But just in case you don’t like playing roulette, why not save sex for marriage, and  remain faithfully monogamous. Then this news will never need to be a concern.
