Former Victoria Secret model and current talk show host, Tyra Banks, is apparently quite shocked by the results of a teenage girl sexuality survey she conducted last summer. One would think that someone in Tyra’s shoes would have an inkling that sex has made it all the way down to the middle school bathrooms and closets. Basically the girls were fairly irresponsible. Get this: · 52% of the survey respondents say they don’t use protection during sex · One in three says she fears already having a sexually transmitted disease · 24% infected with STD’s still have unprotected sex · One in five girls says she WANTS to be a teen mom With the results in, Tyra invited some of the respondents to her show. One girl said that a lot of the guys she was with would get mad if she had used protection. This same girl has contracted Chlamydia twice, and now as genital herpes (a life-long, incurable virus). Another girl who is living with Herpes says she’s never addressed the issue with the boy who gave it to her. This always leads the adult world to demand more time for comprehensive sex education. Let’s tell these kids where to get condoms and how to use them. Yet do they really care? Abstinence education programs tell kids something else: you’re worth waiting for. You have value and you don’t have to give yourself away. You can be 100% healthy and even have the added bonus of a greater opportunity for a successful, long-term relationship when you’re actually ready for it. When thinking about statistics, let us also remember that more than half of high school age students do not have sex. Maybe the abstinence message makes more sense.
