Just when we thought HPV might have met its match with a vaccine protecting women against the strains leading to most cervical cancers, new studies now indicate there is much more to fear. For many, sex just got a bit scarier. HPV is a virus including some 100 different strains, making it particularly nasty. Now government statistics indicate that HPV has been linked to 25,000 cancers in 5 years. And that’s just from those who keep statistics. Many health departments don’t bother to track HPV infections since they are so widespread and one in two sexually active Americans Are currently infected. If this isn’t troubling enough news, most teens are unaware that HPV can be transmitted with just skin-to-skin contact. This is where “safe sex” isn’t really all that safe. To be more direct, oral sex can expose you to this. Just in case we need to clarify this even more, some of these HPV cancers aren’t very pretty. We’re talking anal cancer, throat cancer, and yes, guys, cancer of the penis. You can bet the researchers will be working overtime trying to figure a way to keep the sexually active from falling victim to any of these cancers, but I can offer you 100% protection: remain sexually abstinent until faithful, monogamous marriage. HPV is one game of roulette you don’t have to play.
