Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus, sociologist Kathleen Bogle states:
“College men used to ask women to go on dates with the hope that something sexual, such as necking or petting, might happen at the end of the date. In the hooking-up era, this sexual norm is reversed. College students, following the hookup script, become sexual first and then maybe go on a date someday.”
For college-age women most hope that the hook-up will result in a real relationship. Yet for most men, the result is a one-night stand. Reality bites: almost half of hook-up sexual relationships lead nowhere with the individuals never seeing each other again.
How empty. How futile. How unhealthy. We still have choices when contemplating sex. Keeping your clothes on, and talking about your life makes a great way to begin a relationship. In fact, you might find the person isn’t worth your health, your heart or your time. Value the future. Your mind, your body, and your mate are all worth the wait for sex.
