Recess used to be a time of tag, swing sets and monkey bars. Now, it is more likely children are learning about what it means to be sexy. While not completely knowing what sex means, some kindergarteners nevertheless want to be sexy. They see the same billboards, super market magazine racks, and TV commercials. Sex sells. It also has a convincing effect on children. Yet, they don’t really have a clue. Children in elementary grades are exposed to more explicit images than ever before, but they don’t have the mental maturity to process and understand what they feel. Parents need to be ready to talk and answer questions. These children are heading straight into adolescence with sex on the brain. If we hope to keep them healthy, it would be wise to put some controls on media exposure and provide them with more time to be children. The reality of sex is already overwhelming youth—we don’t need to add 5-10 years olds to that group.
