Oral Sex & Tonsil Cancer: The Epidemic No One Hears About |
|
A recent study published in the International Journal of Cancer indicates that “safer sex” just got more dangerous. Oral sex and even French kissing has been linked to a significant increase in throat cancer. Specific to this study was an increase in tonsil cancer.HPV, the human papillomavirus, has more than 100 different types, some linked to cancer. This virus can be spread through oral sex, and carriers have the virus in their mouths. Often the cancer takes years to manifest itself. Worse yet, tonsil cancer has almost no symptoms, so people aren’t seeking medical attention—by the time they do it has often spread to nearby lymph nodes and is far more challenging to treat.Statistics indicate that one in two sexually active Americans are infected with HPV. The odds are not in your favor if you choose to take a chance with this viral bug. Is it worth it? You decide. But remember this: saving sex (and oral sex) for marriage and remaining with a life-long monogamous partner, is the only way to avoid dealing with HPV.
